If you never learn Thai before or never hear Thai word before I suggest you should practice to say the phase with 2 -3 words together and there are 5 tones sound in Thai.

  • (  -)  This mark represent mid tone
  • (\) This mark represent low tone
  • (^) This mark represent falling tone
  • (/) This mark represent high tone
  • (v) This mark represent rising tone

This 5 tones mark you see on top of  Thai word or syllable, It just to help foreigners who don’ t want to learn the real Thai word. Because Thai don’t use English, Romanize or Karaoke. The romanization is use to help foreigners to get into the sound when we compare to Thai word. So if you start to learn Thai word with romanization or karaoke way from different website or different teacher or different school. They will use their own romanization . The best way is start to learn Thai consonants and Thai vowels. When you can already remember consonants and vowels already  then it will be easy to learn Thai word form actual real Thai word.
